Modulation is the process of superimposing a low-frequency message (information/baseband) signal onto a high-frequency carrier wave, so that the signal can be efficiently transmitted over long distances. Since a sinusoidal carrier wave has three characteristic parameters — amplitude , angular frequency , and phase — modulation can be achieved by varying any one of these in proportion to the instantaneous value of the message signal. This gives the three basic methods of (analog) modulation:
- Amplitude Modulation (AM): The amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of the message signal, while its frequency and phase remain constant.
- Frequency Modulation (FM): The frequency of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the message signal, while its amplitude remains constant. FM gives better noise immunity than AM. …
