Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths in the range of roughly 0.1 mm to 1 m (frequencies from about 300 MHz to 300 GHz), produced by special vacuum tubes such as klystrons, magnetrons and Gunn diodes. Their short wavelength makes them suitable for use in systems requiring high directionality, since they can be transmitted as narrow beams.
Applications:
- RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging): Since microwaves are less diffracted and can be beamed in narrow, well-defined directions, they are used in radar systems for locating distant objects such as aircraft and ships.
- Aircraft navigation: Radar based on microwaves is used for guiding and tracking aircraft.
- Speed guns/traffic control: Microwave (Doppler) radars are used by police to measure the speed of moving vehicles. …
