The sino-atrial (SA) node is autoexcitable and depolarises faster than any other nodal tissue in the heart, so it initiates and controls the heartbeat.

The mammalian heart is myogenic — it can generate its own rhythmic contractions without external nerve stimulation, because it contains specialised nodal (autorhythmic) tissue.
