Internally, the bean-shaped kidney shows a cortex, a pyramid-divided medulla, and a drainage system (calyces → pelvis → ureter) built around roughly a million nephrons.

A longitudinal section of the human kidney (bean-shaped, with a notch called the hilum on the concave side, through which the renal artery enters and the renal vein and ureter leave) shows two main zones:
