Colostrum, the first milk after birth, is rich in IgA antibodies and gives the newborn passive immunity, so it is vital for the infant.

After childbirth the mammary glands first secrete a thick, yellowish fluid called colostrum for the first two to three days before normal milk appears. Its importance for the newborn, part of the Human Reproduction (lactation) topic in NCERT Class 12 Biology, lies in the following:

  • It contains a high concentration of antibodies, especially immunoglobulin A (IgA), which coat the infant's immature gut and respiratory lining and protect against pathogens — giving the baby passive immunity at a time when its own immune system is not yet developed.
