Ch 8Mechanical Properties of Solids — Class 11 Physics, concept-first.

In Chapter 6, we studied the rotation of bodies and saw that motion depends on how mass is distributed within the body. That analysis was restricted to rigid bodies — objects that do not change shape under any force.

8.1

Introduction

In Chapter 6, we studied the rotation of bodies and saw that motion depends on how mass is distributed within the body.

8.2

Stress and Strain

When you apply a force to a solid object, the object does not remain completely unchanged. It deforms — its shape or size changes, at least a little.

8.3

Hooke's Law

When a solid is deformed by an external force, the atoms or molecules are displaced from their equilibrium positions.

8.4

Stress-strain Curve

When a solid is subjected to a deforming force, it undergoes a change in shape or size. The relationship between the stress (the internal restoring force per unit area) and the strain (the relative de…

8.5

Elastic Moduli

The textbook introduces three distinct moduli, each corresponding to a specific type of strain:

8.5.1

Young's Modulus

3 Q

When a solid is stretched, compressed, or sheared, it deforms. The elastic modulus is the number that tells us how stiff the material is — how much stress it takes to produce a given strain.

8.5.2

Shear Modulus

When a solid is subjected to a force parallel to one of its faces while the opposite face is held fixed, the shape of the solid changes without any change in volume.

8.5.3

Bulk Modulus

When a solid is subjected to a uniform pressure from all sides — like a cube being squeezed equally on every face — the volume changes but the shape remains the same.

8.5.4

Poisson's Ratio

When you stretch a rubber band lengthwise, you notice it also becomes thinner. This isn't a coincidence — it's a fundamental property of how solids deform.

8.5.5

Elastic Potential Energy in a Stretched Wire

When a wire is stretched, the work done by the deforming force is stored inside the material as elastic potential energy.

8.6

Applications of Elastic Behaviour of Materials

The theory of elasticity is not just an abstract set of formulas — it is the engineering backbone of every structure you see around you.

Summary

- Stress is the internal restoring force per unit area: . Strain is the fractional change in dimension: (longitudinal), (volumetric), or (shear).

Points to Ponder

1. When a wire hangs from a ceiling with a weight attached at the bottom, the ceiling pulls upward on the wire with a force equal to (Newton’s third law).
