Cry proteins are crystal insecticidal toxins made by the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, exploited to make Bt crops pest-resistant.

The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) forms specific protein crystals during a particular phase of its growth that have insecticidal action. These proteins, called Cry proteins (encoded by various cry genes, e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb), exist as inactive protoxins, but once ingested by an insect, are converted by the alkaline pH of the insect gut into an active toxin form that binds to the gut epithelium, causing cell swelling/lysis and eventual death of the insect larva.
