Hind II is a restriction endonuclease - an enzyme that cuts DNA internally at a specific recognition sequence, unlike an exonuclease which removes nucleotides from the ends.

An endonuclease cuts a nucleic acid strand at internal (non-terminal) positions. Hind II, isolated from the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, was the first restriction endonuclease discovered - it recognises a specific six base-pair palindromic sequence in DNA and always cuts within that sequence, at a specific point. This site-specific cutting is the basis of recombinant DNA technology.
