A food web is a realistic network formed by interlinking many simple, linear food chains; ecological succession is the sequential, directional replacement of communities in an area leading to a stable climax community.

(a) Differences between food chain and food web:

  1. A food chain is a single, straight-line sequence of organisms (producer -> herbivore -> carnivore...) through which food energy passes; a food web is a network of several interconnected food chains operating together in an ecosystem.
  2. In a food chain, each organism is restricted to feeding on (and being fed upon by) only one other type of organism at the adjacent trophic level; in a food web, an organism may occupy more than one trophic level and feed on multiple types of organisms, and be eaten by multiple predators, offering alternative pathways for energy flow. This interconnectedness of a food web makes an ecosystem more stable, since if one food source/link is lost, the organism can survive on an alternative link.

(b) Ecological succession: This is the gradual, fairly predictable and orderly process of change in the species composition of a given area, occurring in a sequence of steps, developing over time from a pioneer/early community towards a mature, relatively stable climax community, best adapted to the average climatic conditions of that area. It occurs in two forms: …
