A nitrile is converted to the corresponding aldehyde by partial (controlled) reduction using SnCl2/HCl followed by hydrolysis of the resulting imine - this is the Stephen reaction.

Stephen's reduction: the nitrile is first reduced by SnCl2 in the presence of HCl (passing dry HCl gas) to form an aldimine hydrochloride (imine salt) intermediate, which on hydrolysis with water gives the aldehyde:

CH3-C#N --(SnCl2/HCl)--> CH3-CH=NH.HCl (imine salt) --(H2O, hydrolysis)--> CH3CHO + NH4Cl
