(a) Two functions of the salt bridge.

  1. It completes the internal electrical circuit of the galvanic cell, allowing ions to migrate between the two half-cells so current can flow continuously.
  2. It maintains electrical neutrality in each half-cell: as oxidation at the anode generates excess cations and reduction at the cathode consumes cations (or generates excess anions), the salt bridge supplies counter-ions to each compartment, preventing a build-up of charge that would otherwise stop the cell reaction.
