Chloroform reacts with concentrated HNO3 on heating to form chloropicrin (trichloronitromethane, CCl3NO2), used as an insecticide and fumigant.

Chloroform (CHCl3) contains an acidic C-H bond (activated by the three electron-withdrawing chlorines). On heating with concentrated nitric acid, the H is replaced by a nitro group (-NO2):
