Self-inductance depends on the coil's geometry (turns, area, length) and the magnetic material inside it.

For a long solenoid of NN turns, length ll, cross-sectional area AA, and core permeability μ\mu (= μ0μr\mu_0\mu_r), the self-inductance is:

L=μN2AlL = \frac{\mu N^2 A}{l}

From this, self-inductance depends on:

  1. Number of turns, NN — L∝N2L \propto N^2; more turns give a much larger inductance.
  2. Area of cross-section, AA of the coil — a larger area gives a larger inductance.
