Fusion joins light nuclei (needs extreme heat); fission splits a heavy nucleus (neutron-triggered); balancing mass number and atomic number in the given fission reaction gives a = 140, b = 38.

(i) Two differences:

  1. In nuclear FUSION, two or more light nuclei combine to form a single heavier nucleus (e.g. hydrogen isotopes forming helium); in nuclear FISSION, a single heavy nucleus splits into two (or more) lighter nuclei (e.g. U-235 splitting after neutron capture).
  2. Fusion requires extremely high temperature (of the order 10710^7-10810^8 K) to overcome the strong Coulomb repulsion between the nuclei before they can fuse; fission can be initiated at ordinary temperature simply by bombarding a heavy nucleus with a slow (thermal) neutron. …
