Forfeiture = cancellation of shares and the money paid on them for non-payment of calls; the amount received is credited to Share Forfeiture A/c.

When a shareholder fails to pay the allotment or any call money within the time allowed, the company, acting under its articles and after a proper notice, may forfeit his shares. On forfeiture:

  • the Share Capital Account is debited with the called-up amount of the forfeited shares (that capital is cancelled),
  • the amount already received on them is credited to the Share Forfeiture Account (a capital gain), and
  • the unpaid allotment/calls are credited to the respective call/arrears accounts. …
