Export trade runs from enquiry and order → licences and finance → producing, inspecting and clearing goods → shipment (bill of lading) → sending documents and realising payment.

An export transaction is carried out through a sequence of steps:

  1. Trade Enquiry and Quotation — The exporter receives an enquiry from a foreign buyer and sends a quotation stating price and terms.
  2. Receipt of Order / Indent — On acceptance of the quotation, the importer places an export order (indent) specifying goods, quantity and terms.
  3. Obtaining Export Licence/Registration — The exporter registers and obtains the Import-Export Code (IEC) and any licence required.
  4. Arranging Pre-shipment Finance — The exporter arranges funds (often pre-shipment credit from a bank) to produce/procure the goods.
  5. Production/Procurement and Packing — The goods are manufactured or procured, properly packed and marked.
  6. Pre-shipment Inspection — The goods are inspected for quality and a certificate is obtained where required.
  7. Excise and Customs Clearance — Excise formalities are completed and customs clearance is obtained by submitting the shipping bill and other documents.
  8. Reserving Shipping Space and Loading — Space is booked on a ship; the goods are loaded and a mate's receipt and then the bill of lading are obtained from the shipping company.
  9. Certificate of Origin and Insurance — A certificate of origin is obtained and the goods are insured against transit risk (marine insurance).
  10. Sending Documents and Realising Payment — The shipping documents are sent to the importer through banks; payment is realised through a bill of exchange and/or a letter of credit. …
