Managerial control keeps activities on plan by measuring and correcting performance; it is vital for goal achievement, order and efficient resource use, but is limited by hard-to-set standards, cost, external factors and employee resistance.

Meaning: Managerial control is the process of ensuring that the organisation's activities conform to its plans. It involves setting standards, measuring actual performance, comparing it with standards, analysing deviations and taking corrective action. It is a pervasive and goal-oriented function performed at all levels.

Significance (Importance) of Control:

  1. Accomplishing organisational goals — Control measures progress towards goals and corrects deviations, keeping the organisation on track.
  2. Judging accuracy of standards — A good control system reveals whether the standards set were accurate and realistic, enabling their revision.
  3. Making efficient use of resources — It ensures resources are used as per plan, reducing wastage.
  4. Improving employee motivation — Clear standards and the knowledge that performance is measured motivate employees to perform well.
  5. Ensuring order and discipline — It keeps a close check on activities and discourages dishonest or careless behaviour.
  6. Facilitating coordination in action — It keeps all departments and individuals working towards common goals.

Limitations of Control:

  2. Little control over external factors — A firm cannot control external forces like government policy, competition or technological change.
  3. Costly and time-consuming — An elaborate control system requires money, effort and time, which small firms may find burdensome; benefits must justify costs. …
