Barriers (semantic, psychological, organisational, personal) distort communication; effective communication needs clarity, completeness, proper language/medium, feedback and good listening.

Barriers of Communication — obstacles that hinder or distort the message:

  1. Semantic Barriers — Problems of language and meaning: use of difficult words or jargon, badly expressed messages, words with several meanings, and faulty translation.

  3. Organisational Barriers — Features of the organisation: a long chain of command, rigid rules and procedures, excessive status/hierarchy differences, and organisational facilities.
  4. Personal Barriers — Attitudes of the sender and receiver: fear of challenge to authority, unwillingness to communicate, lack of confidence in subordinates, and lack of proper incentives.

Principles of Effective Communication:

  1. Clarity — The message should be clear and free from ambiguity.
  2. Completeness and Adequacy — It should contain all necessary facts and be adequate in quantity.
  3. Proper Language and Medium — Use simple language and the appropriate channel for the situation.
  4. Consistency — The message should not contradict earlier messages, policies or objectives.
