Leadership style is a leader's typical behaviour pattern in guiding subordinates; the main styles are autocratic, democratic and free-rein, each with distinct characteristics.

Meaning of Leadership Style: Leadership style refers to the characteristic and relatively consistent pattern of behaviour that a leader adopts while directing, guiding, motivating and influencing the behaviour of his subordinates. The style a leader chooses affects the attitude, morale and performance of the group.

Main Leadership Styles and their Characteristics:

  1. Autocratic (Authoritarian) Style
    • The leader centralises authority and takes all decisions himself.
    • He gives orders and expects strict obedience; there is little consultation with subordinates.
    • He relies on rewards and punishment to secure compliance.
    • It gives quick decisions and tight control but lowers morale and initiative; suitable where subordinates are unskilled or decisions must be fast.
  2. Democratic (Participative) Style
    • The leader consults subordinates and involves them in decision-making.
    • He guides through persuasion, encouragement and two-way communication rather than command.
    • It raises morale, motivation, commitment and the quality of decisions; it is slower but well-suited to skilled, mature employees.
  3. Free-Rein (Laissez-faire) Style
    • The leader gives subordinates maximum freedom to set their own goals and decide how to achieve them.
