The functions of management are planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling — a continuous, interrelated process that turns resources into results.

Management is a process made up of a series of interrelated functions. These are:

  1. Planning — The primary function; deciding in advance what is to be done, how, when and by whom. It sets objectives and selects the best course of action, giving direction and reducing uncertainty.
  2. Organising — Arranging physical and human resources into a workable structure: identifying and dividing work, departmentalising, assigning duties and granting authority, and establishing reporting relationships.
  3. Staffing — Filling the organisational positions with the right people and keeping them filled: estimating manpower, recruiting, selecting, training, appraising and compensating employees.
