Delegation is the downward transfer of authority to a subordinate; its process is assign responsibility → grant authority → create accountability.

Meaning: Delegation of authority is the process by which a manager divides his work and entrusts part of it, along with the authority needed to do it, to his subordinates. It enables the manager to share his workload and allows subordinates to develop. Authority can be delegated, but accountability cannot be transferred — the superior remains ultimately answerable.

Process / Elements of Delegation: Delegation consists of three steps, which are also its three elements:

  1. Assignment of Duties (Responsibility) — The first step is for the manager to decide what duties he wants the subordinate to perform and to clearly assign that work/responsibility to him. The duties must be defined in terms of expected results.
  2. Granting of Authority — To perform the assigned duties, the subordinate must be given the necessary authority — the power to take decisions, use resources and give orders. Authority granted should be adequate to carry out the responsibility (parity of authority and responsibility). …
