The consumption function shows how consumption depends on income: C = a + bY, where a is autonomous consumption and b is the MPC.

The consumption function (given by Keynes) is the functional relationship between total consumption expenditure and total income. It shows that consumption depends mainly on income, and is written as:

C = f(Y)

In its simple linear form: C = a + bY, where

  • C = total consumption,
  • Y = total (national) income,
  • a = autonomous consumption (the amount consumed even when income is zero, met out of past savings or borrowing), and
  • b = the Marginal Propensity to Consume (ΔC/ΔY), the slope of the consumption curve.

Keynes's psychological law of consumption states that as income increases, consumption also increases, but by less than the increase in income (so 0 < b < 1). The part of income not consumed is saved, giving the saving function S = Y − C.
