Barter fails because of the absence of double coincidence of wants, no common measure of value, difficulty of storing value, and the indivisibility of goods.

The barter system is a system of direct exchange of goods for goods, without the use of money. Although it worked in very simple economies, it suffers from serious difficulties (demerits) which eventually led to the invention of money. Four important demerits are:

  1. Lack of double coincidence of wants — In barter, an exchange can take place only when each party has what the other wants and wants what the other has, at the same time. For example, a person who has wheat and wants cloth must find someone who has cloth and wants wheat. Finding such a double coincidence of wants is very difficult and wastes time and effort.

  2. Lack of a common measure (unit) of value — In barter there is no single commodity in terms of which the value of all other goods can be expressed. The value of each good must be stated in terms of every other good, which creates countless exchange ratios and makes trade very complicated.

  3. Difficulty in storing value (wealth) — Under barter, wealth has to be stored in the form of goods. Many goods (like foodgrains, vegetables, cattle) are perishable, costly to store, and lose value over time, so it is difficult to store purchasing power for the future.

  4. Difficulty in the division of goods (indivisibility) — Many goods cannot be divided into small parts without losing their value — for example, a cow or a house. This makes it impossible to exchange them for small quantities of other goods.
