The current account records trade in goods (visible), services (invisible), income flows, and unilateral transfers with the rest of the world.

The current account of the balance of payments records all transactions relating to goods, services, income and current transfers between the residents of a country and the rest of the world during a year. Its main components are:

  1. Export and import of goods (visible items / merchandise) — This records the export and import of physical, tangible goods. The difference between the value of exports of goods and imports of goods is called the balance of trade (or balance of visible trade). These are called 'visible' items because goods can be seen crossing the border.

  2. Export and import of services (invisible items) — This records trade in services such as shipping, banking, insurance, tourism, transport and software services. These are called 'invisible' items because services cannot be seen crossing the border. (Together, visible and invisible trade make up the balance on goods and services.)

  3. Income (investment income and compensation of employees) — This records the income earned on investments and factor services: interest, profit and dividends received from abroad and paid abroad, and the compensation of employees working across borders.
