Marginal cost is the additional cost of producing one extra unit of output.

Marginal Cost (MC) is defined as the additional cost incurred when output is increased by one unit. In symbols, MC = (Total Cost of n units) − (Total Cost of n−1 units), or the change in total cost divided by the change in output.

Since fixed cost does not change with output, marginal cost is actually the addition to total variable cost; it is unaffected by fixed cost. For example, if the total cost of producing 4 units is 70 and that of 5 units is 90, the marginal cost of the 5th unit is 20.
