Imperfect (monopolistic) competition is marked by many sellers, product differentiation and some price control through selling costs.

Imperfect competition refers to market situations lying between perfect competition and monopoly, the most common form being monopolistic competition. Three of its characteristics are:

  1. Large number of sellers with product differentiation: many firms sell similar but not identical products, differentiated by brand, quality, packaging or design (for example, different brands of toothpaste or soap).

  2. Some control over price: because each firm's product is slightly different, the firm faces a downward-sloping demand curve and has limited power to set its own price, unlike a price-taker in perfect competition.
