Substitute goods can replace one another to satisfy the same want; a rise in the price of one raises the demand for the other. Examples: tea and coffee.

Substitute goods are pairs of goods that can be used in place of one another to satisfy the same want. Since either good can serve the purpose, the consumer can switch from one to the other depending on their prices.

Relationship: there is a positive (direct) relationship between the price of one substitute and the demand for the other. If the price of one good rises, consumers find it relatively expensive and shift to the cheaper substitute, so the demand for the substitute increases; if its price falls, consumers shift towards it, reducing the demand for the other. Such goods therefore have positive cross elasticity of demand. (This is also called competitive demand.)
