Bt = Bacillus thuringiensis; its cry-gene toxin is put into cotton to make Bt cotton, which kills bollworms and resists pests.

Bt is short for Bacillus thuringiensis, a soil bacterium. During sporulation it forms protein crystals containing a toxic insecticidal protein called the Bt toxin (Cry protein). This protein is coded by cry genes (such as cryIAc and cryIIAb). The protoxin is inactive as taken up, but in the alkaline gut of susceptible insects it is activated and binds to the gut wall, creating pores that kill the insect. It is harmless to humans and most other animals.
