Adaptive radiation = evolution of many differently-adapted species from one ancestor in different habitats (e.g. Darwin's finches).

Adaptive radiation is the evolutionary process in which organisms of a single ancestral stock rapidly diversify into a variety of new forms/species, each adapted to a specific environment or way of life, usually when new habitats become available.

Examples:

  1. Darwin's finches: On the Galapagos Islands, Darwin observed many varieties of small black finches that had evolved from a common seed-eating ancestor. They developed different beak shapes suited to different diets (seed-eaters, insect-eaters, etc.).
