Human evolution went from ape-like Dryopithecus/Ramapithecus through Australopithecus, Homo habilis, H. erectus and Neanderthals to modern Homo sapiens, marked by erect posture, a larger brain, tool-making and speech.

Evolution of man. Man (Homo sapiens) evolved gradually from ape-like primate ancestors; the fossil record shows the following main stages:

  1. Dryopithecus and Ramapithecus (~15 mya) — ape-like primates; Dryopithecus was more ape-like, Ramapithecus more man-like, hairy and walking like apes.
  2. Australopithecus (~3–4 mya, Africa) — the 'ape-man'; walked erect on two legs, about 1.2 m tall, brain ~500 cc, ate fruit and hunted with stones.
  3. Homo habilis (~2 mya) — the 'handy man'; brain ~650–800 cc; the first to make and use stone tools; probably did not eat meat.
  4. Homo erectus (~1.5 mya) — brain ~900 cc; ate meat, and is believed to have used fire; e.g. Java man and Peking man.
  5. Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthal man, ~1,00,000–40,000 years ago) — brain ~1400 cc; lived in caves, buried their dead, used hides to protect the body. …
