Physical barriers (skin, mucus) stop microbes from entering; cellular barriers (phagocytes, NK cells) destroy those that get in — both are innate immunity.

Context. Innate immunity provides four types of barriers. Two of them:

1. Physical barriers. These are the body's outer coverings that prevent the entry of microbes:

  • The skin — a tough, dry outer layer that physically blocks most micro-organisms.
  • Mucous membranes/mucus coating of the respiratory, gastro-intestinal and urino-genital tracts traps microbes and prevents their entry.

2. Cellular barriers. Certain cells of the blood and tissues engulf and destroy any microbe that manages to enter:

  • Leucocytes (WBCs) — polymorpho-nuclear leucocytes (neutrophils) and monocytes/macrophages which phagocytose (engulf and digest) microbes. …
