Lichen is a fungus–alga mutualism; mycorrhiza is a fungus–root mutualism. Both are examples of symbiosis where both partners benefit.

Lichen:

  • A lichen is a close, mutualistic association between a fungus (mycobiont) and a photosynthetic partner — a green alga or a cyanobacterium (phycobiont).
  • The alga carries out photosynthesis and supplies food to the fungus.
  • The fungus provides shelter, anchorage, water and minerals, and protects the alga from drying.
