Sex-linked traits are carried on sex chromosomes; haemophilia is X-linked recessive, so it mostly affects males and is transmitted through carrier females.

Sex-linked inheritance

Genes located on the sex chromosomes (X or Y) are called sex-linked genes, and the characters they control show sex-linked inheritance. Most sex-linked genes lie on the X chromosome (X-linked). Since a male has only one X chromosome, a single recessive allele on his X is enough to express the trait, so X-linked recessive disorders (like haemophilia and colour blindness) appear far more often in males.

Inheritance of haemophilia

Haemophilia ('bleeder's disease') is an X-linked recessive disorder in which blood fails to clot normally because a clotting factor is deficient; even a small cut can cause prolonged bleeding.

  • Let X^H = normal allele, X^h = haemophilia allele.
  • Genotypes: Normal female X^H X^H; Carrier female X^H X^h (normal but transmits the disease); Haemophilic female X^h X^h (rare, usually lethal). Normal male X^H Y; Haemophilic male X^h Y.

Typical cross — Carrier mother (X^H X^h) x Normal father (X^H Y): …
