Polygenic inheritance is when a single trait is controlled by many genes whose effects add up, producing continuous (quantitative) variation — like human skin colour.

Concept: Polygenic inheritance (quantitative inheritance) is the type of inheritance in which a single character is governed by two or more (many) genes, called polygenes. Each gene contributes a small, equal and additive (cumulative) effect to the phenotype. The result is continuous variation — the trait varies gradually over a range rather than falling into sharply distinct classes, and it is also influenced by the environment.

Example — human skin colour (Davenport):

  • Skin colour is controlled by (at least) three pairs of genes, say A, B, C (dominant alleles add melanin/pigment; recessive a, b, c add none).
  • The number of dominant (pigment) alleles decides the darkness:
    • AABBCC (6 dominant alleles) → very dark (black) skin.
    • aabbcc (0 dominant alleles) → very light (white) skin.
    • Intermediate genotypes (e.g. AaBbCc) → intermediate (brown) shades. …
