Down syndrome (trisomy of chromosome 21) shows short stature, a small round head, a furrowed protruding tongue, a broad flat face and retarded mental and physical development.

Down syndrome (Down's syndrome) is a chromosomal (genetic) disorder caused by the presence of an additional (third) copy of chromosome 21 — trisomy 21, so the affected individual has 47 chromosomes (2n = 45 + XX/XY) instead of 46. It arises due to non-disjunction of chromosome 21 during gamete formation, and its frequency increases with the mother's age.
