Cross-pollination (xenogamy) is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of a flower borne on a different plant of the same species. It is brought about by external agents such as wind, water, insects and other animals. To favour cross-pollination, plants show devices like unisexuality (dicliny), self-sterility, and different maturation times of anther and stigma (dichogamy).
Merits (advantages):
- It brings about mixing of genes from two different plants, producing genetic variation, which is the raw material for evolution and breeding.
- The offspring (seeds) are healthier, more vigorous and better able to adapt to changing environments (hybrid vigour).
- New, useful varieties can be produced.
Demerits (disadvantages):
