Polyembryony is the presence of more than one embryo in a single seed/ovule; a classic example is many varieties of Citrus (orange) and mango.

Polyembryony is the phenomenon in which more than one embryo develops within a single seed (from one ovule). It was first reported by Leeuwenhoek in orange seeds.

How it happens: In many species, besides the normal zygotic embryo formed after fertilisation, additional adventive embryos arise from the cells of the nucellus or integuments (this is a form of apomixis — asexual seed formation). Because these extra embryos come from the maternal tissue, they are genetically identical to the mother plant.

Examples:

  • Citrus (orange, lemon) — commonly cited example.
  • Mango varieties. …
