Diazotisation of aniline with NaNO2/HCl at 0-5 C gives C6H5N2Cl; it is used to make azo dyes and to prepare substituted benzenes (via Sandmeyer/Gattermann reactions).

Preparation (diazotisation):

Aniline reacts with nitrous acid (generated in situ from sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid) at a low temperature of 273-278 K (0-5 degree C) to form benzene diazonium chloride:

C6H5NH2 + NaNO2 + 2HCl --(273-278 K)--> C6H5N2^+Cl^- + NaCl + 2H2O

The low temperature is essential because the diazonium salt is unstable and decomposes on warming.

Uses of benzene diazonium chloride:

  1. Preparation of azo dyes: it couples with phenols or aromatic amines to give brightly coloured azo compounds used as dyes, e.g. coupling with phenol gives p-hydroxyazobenzene. …
