DNA (deoxyribose, thymine, double-stranded, stable) is the store of genetic information; RNA (ribose, uracil, mostly single-stranded, less stable) translates that information into proteins.

Structural differences.

FeatureDNARNA
Sugar2-Deoxyribose (no –OH at C-2')Ribose (–OH at C-2')
Nitrogen basesA, G, C and Thymine (T)A, G, C and Uracil (U)
StrandsDouble-stranded helix (two complementary chains)Usually single-stranded
StabilityChemically more stable (deoxyribose, protected in double helix)Less stable (2'-OH makes it more reactive)
Size/amountVery long; fixed amount per cellShorter; amount varies with protein-synthesis activity

Functional differences.

  • DNA is the hereditary material: it stores the genetic information and can replicate (self-duplicate) to pass information to daughter cells. It also serves as the template for RNA synthesis (transcription).
  • RNA is synthesised from DNA and mainly carries out protein synthesis:
    • m-RNA (messenger) carries the coded message from DNA to the ribosome, …
