Make haloalkanes from alcohols (+HX) or alkanes (+X2X_2, hv); with alcoholic KOH they eliminate to alkenes, with AgCN they give isocyanides.

Two general methods of preparing haloalkanes:

  1. From alcohols (with HXHX, or PCl5PCl_5/SOCl2SOCl_2 for chlorides): C2H5OH+HCl→anhy. ZnCl2C2H5Cl+H2OC_2H_5OH+HCl\xrightarrow{\text{anhy. }ZnCl_2}C_2H_5Cl+H_2O
  2. By halogenation of alkanes (free-radical, in presence of light/heat): CH4+Cl2→hνCH3Cl+HClCH_4+Cl_2\xrightarrow{h\nu}CH_3Cl+HCl

Reactions of a haloalkane:

  1. With alcoholic KOH — dehydrohalogenation (elimination of HXHX) to give an alkene: CH3CH2Br+KOH(alc.)→ΔCH2=CH2+KBr+H2OCH_3CH_2Br+KOH(\text{alc.})\xrightarrow{\Delta}CH_2=CH_2+KBr+H_2O (With aqueous KOH the product would instead be the alcohol, by substitution.)
  2. With AgCN — the silver salt bonds through nitrogen, giving an alkyl isocyanide (carbylamine): …
