(i) Interstitial defect: When a constituent particle (atom or ion) occupies an interstitial (empty) site of the lattice in addition to the normal lattice sites, the crystal shows an interstitial defect. Since no particle leaves the lattice and an extra one is accommodated, the density of the solid increases. (In ionic solids this appears as the cation part of a Frenkel defect.)
