Mole fraction = moles of a component / total moles; molality = moles of solute per kg of solvent.

(i) Mole fraction. The mole fraction of a component in a solution is the ratio of the number of moles of that component to the total number of moles of all components present. For a binary solution of solute A and solvent B:

xA=nAnA+nB,xB=nBnA+nB,xA+xB=1x_A = \dfrac{n_A}{n_A + n_B}, \qquad x_B = \dfrac{n_B}{n_A + n_B}, \qquad x_A + x_B = 1

It is a unitless quantity and is independent of temperature.

(ii) Molality (mm). Molality is the number of moles of solute dissolved per kilogram of solvent: …
