Electromagnetic induction. Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a closed circuit (coil) changes, an electromotive force (emf) is induced in the circuit, and if the circuit is closed an induced current flows. The flux can be changed by moving a magnet relative to the coil, changing the current in a neighbouring coil, or changing the coil's area/orientation in a field. This phenomenon is electromagnetic induction, discovered by Faraday.
