Q.What is atomic model of magnetism? Differentiate between paramagnetic, diamagnetic and ferromagnetic substances on this basis. Also give one example of each. OR There is minimum deviation of light ray on passing through a prism (). If angle of incidence is twice the angle of refraction for this ray, then what will be the angle of prism and the angle of refraction?

Atomic model of magnetism. In every atom the electrons revolve around the nucleus and spin about their own axes. Each moving electron is a tiny current loop and therefore has a magnetic moment. The vector sum of all these orbital and spin moments gives the atom its resultant magnetic moment. The magnetic behaviour of a material depends on whether these atomic moments cancel or add up, and how they respond to an external field.
Comparison.
| Property | Diamagnetic | Paramagnetic | Ferromagnetic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net atomic moment | Zero | Small, non-zero | Large, non-zero |
| In external field | Weakly repelled | Weakly attracted | Strongly attracted |
| Relative permeability | slightly | slightly | |
| Susceptibility | small, negative | small, positive | large, positive |
