Interference = superposition of two coherent waves giving bright/dark fringes; diffraction = bending of light around obstacles. Interference requires coherent, same-frequency sources with a constant phase relationship.

Interference. When two light waves from coherent sources overlap, they superpose. Where they arrive in phase they reinforce (constructive interference, bright fringe); where they arrive out of phase they cancel (destructive interference, dark fringe). Energy is merely redistributed — total energy is conserved.

Diffraction. The bending or spreading of light as it passes the edge of an obstacle or a narrow slit, sending light into the geometrical shadow region and producing a pattern of a bright central maximum with weaker side maxima. It is significant when the aperture size is comparable to the wavelength.
