Organising is the process of dividing total work into manageable jobs, grouping them into departments, assigning them to the right people, and defining who reports to whom — in four basic steps.

Organising is one of the basic functions of management. It means identifying and grouping the work to be performed, defining and delegating authority and responsibility among the people who will perform that work, and establishing relationships for the purpose of enabling people to work together most effectively in achieving the enterprise's objectives — essentially, it is the process of designing the organisation's structure.

The process of organising generally follows these steps:

  1. Identification and division of work: The total work necessary to achieve organisational objectives is identified and then broken down into smaller, manageable jobs/tasks, avoiding both duplication of effort and overlapping of responsibilities.

  2. Departmentalisation: Similar and related jobs are grouped together into units/departments, typically by function, product, territory or customer, so that specialisation and coordination become easier.
