Among Taylor's scientific management techniques are Time Study, Motion Study and Functional Foremanship (along with Fatigue study, Method study, Standardisation and the Differential piece-rate system).

1. Time Study: Taylor used a stopwatch to determine the standard time required to complete a given task by an average worker, working at a normal pace. This standard time then became the basis for setting fair performance targets.

2. Motion Study: This involves closely observing the movements a worker makes while performing a task, in order to eliminate unnecessary, wasteful or fatigue-causing motions, so that only the essential, efficient movements remain.

3. Functional Foremanship: Taylor proposed replacing the single all-purpose foreman with a team of eight specialised functional experts — four on the planning side (route clerk, instruction card clerk, time & cost clerk, disciplinarian) and four on the production side (gang boss, speed boss, repair boss, inspector) — each an expert in their own narrow function, applying the principle of specialisation to supervision itself.
