Hotspots concentrate the world's most threatened, richest biodiversity to prioritise conservation.

A region qualifies as a biodiversity hotspot when it has (i) very high levels of species richness and (ii) a high degree of endemism (species found nowhere else) that is (iii) facing an extreme threat of habitat loss/degradation. Since conservation resources are limited, environmentalists declared such hotspots to focus conservation priority where the most unique biodiversity is at greatest risk of being lost forever. Originally 25 hotspots were identified worldwide (now more), covering a small fraction of land but harbouring an extraordinarily high share of species. Two of India's biodiversity hotspots are the Western Ghats and the Himalaya (Indo-Burma is also often cited).
