Transgenic animals = animals carrying a deliberately introduced foreign gene. Uses: disease models (transgenic mice for cancer/Alzheimer's), biological products (Rosie the cow → human-protein-rich milk), and vaccine/chemical safety testing.

Concept

A transgenic (genetically modified) animal is one whose DNA has been manipulated to carry and express an additional foreign gene. About 95% of transgenic animals are mice; rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, cows and fish have also been made transgenic.
