GM crops reduce pesticide dependence, improve stress tolerance, and boost nutrition/shelf life.

Genetically modified (GM) plants carry a foreign gene introduced deliberately to give them a useful new trait, which benefits agriculture in several ways:

  1. Pest resistance — GM crops such as Bt cotton carry a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis producing a toxin lethal to specific insect pests, greatly reducing the need for chemical pesticides.

  2. Tolerance to abiotic stresses — GM crops can be engineered to tolerate cold, drought, salinity and other environmental stresses, allowing cultivation in otherwise unfavourable conditions.
